We started our
Monster Unit by reading the book There Are Monsters Everywhere
written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer.
Then we read The Monster Trap by Dean
Morrisey.
The students then had the assignment to
"Build a Better Monster Trap!" as a family home project. These are
their traps... Click on an image to

kids did an amazing job!
How I made my trap:
It's made out of shoe boxes and paper and glue. It even has a fire pit. How my trap works:
First we put some monster food in the trap. Then we put out a sign that says "Free Monster Food." The monster will come in and start eating the food. While he's eating, the secret floor will start to move until the monster falls through the hole in the floor. The monster will fall into the hidden fire pit.
I will save my monster in a jar. I built a trap out of Legos. First I built 4 walls and then I built a ladder to a high door. Last I built a roof. My trap works by using gum as bait. My monster smells the gum and he climbs up the ladder to find the gum. He jumps down to eat the gum. He gets trapped because there is no ladder on the inside. I am going to let him go at the park. The monster crawls into the box and steps on the ramp. When he steps on the ramp, this picture of a face scares him and then he backs up and his tail catches in the circle. He doesn't notice. Tehn he goes around the ramp and tries to get the gum, but before he gets the gum, the box closes. Monster Trap Description
To make my trap I used glue, paper, cardboard, a cookie tub, soda can, skewer, acandy and a printer. I punched two holes in the soda can and the cookie tub. Then I stuck the skewer through the holes. I cut out a piece of cardboard to make the ladder. I wrapped printed paper arounf the can, cardboard and tub. I stuck tape on the bottom of the tub. I glued candy on the can. How my trap works:
My monster loves candy. When he smells the candy on the can, he climbs up the ladder. When he gets to the top he steps on the can. Once he is on the can it starts to spin. He loses his balance and falls on to the sticky tape. Then I grab him and put him in a jar. I started with a box then we cut a hole for a window then we put a hole in the top. We put sticky felt on the top. Then we put construction paper on the sides for decoration. My trap bait is dog cookies and the monster uses the ladder to get to the bait. He falls into the hole before reaching the dog cookie. The window is for seeing the monster play withthe rope toys, and eat the cookies inside the box. How I made my trap:
We used a shoe box, paper, batting to make the snow, presents, Christmas decorations, stickers, cotton balls, google eyes, a string and a bell.
How my trap works:
My monster loves presents. Teh monster will ring the bell and I will know that the monster is in the trap opening the presents. I will then pull the string and the box will close and trap the monster. When I catch the monster, I will wrap him up in a present so he can't get out. When the monster walks by, the monster will smell the treat on top of the trap. He will climb the ladder to eat the bait. When he steps off the ladder to get the treat, the floor will cave in and the monster will fall in. The floor will then spring back up so that the monster will not get back out. How I made my monster trap:
To make my trap, I started by finding a good box and some very sticky tape. I put the tape in loops and stuck it to the bottom of the box. I kept doing this until the entire floor of the trap was covered with tape, except the spot where the bait would go. I close the roof and taped it shut. Next, I cut out one end of the box to make the door. I left the piece attached at the bottom so the door could be reclosed. Then I covered the box in shiny aluminum foil and decorated it to attract the monster's attention. I chose a bait of marshmellows and candy corn and put it in a bag. Then I put the bag inside the trap. Finally I found a good hiding spot to watch for the monster to enter the trap. My Candy Monster Trap
My monster trap works like this. There are two layers, a top and a bottom layer. The top layer has lots of elements and details. Teh bottom layer has a cage. On the top there are Smarties. The monster sees the Smarties and walks while eating them. Then he sees three Smarties on the grass. Under the Smarties is a hole. The cage is under the hole. UH-OH! He's too heavy! Then he falls down into the cage and we have ourselves a monster in a trap! I design a trap thinking how to catch my monster. On a gift box I sealed around it and then put inside the best dish forthe monster. I left open two doors.
The plan to catch the monster:
When the monster walks around the trap he smells his favorite food, and then he will go up the stairs where the food is. When he finds the food, he goes inside and then the front door will lock up. How to Trap an M&M Monster
1. First we made the grass with fabric.
2. I painted the board with glue and put on the sand and the fabric. I painted the wood brown.
3. Then I glued the M&Ms on top of the wood.
4. I put smooth tape on the bottom of the pole and put sticky tape near the top.
5. Last we glued the wood to the board.
How it works
The monster sees the M&Ms at the top of the pole. He walks through the grass and the sand to get to the pole. The monster climbs the pole on the smooth tape, but he gets stuck on the sticky tape when he is almost to the top. When the monster gets stuck on the tape, I will pick him up still on the pole and put him in a jar. So you get a box, you get scissors. Make a small hole with a knife. Get glue. Cut cloth in a square. put it over the boxand another one over it. Get a string and cut it. Put it under the second cloth into a rectangle, and put three cylinders in it. Get the scissors again and put a hole and pull it.
We made my monster trap by using a cardboard box and covering it with bright colored paper. My monster trap works when my monster sees the bright box then he will go to it. When he gets close he will smell the cereal. My monster loves cereal. He will go inside and I will pick up the box and shake the monster into a jar. I built it with paper and cardboard. Teh trap is under the house. The bait is in the house. The monster is trying to get in the house. But when the monster steps on the trap, BOOM! It will snap the trap. First I started with a shoe box. Second I put colored paper on the box. Third I built my cage oout of craft sticks. Then I made trees out of colored paper. Last I attached the cage to the string.
To make the trap work the monster has to pull on the cheese. Then the cage will fall on the monster. My trap is made out of wood and leaves. I'm going to dig a hole in my backyard and I will put the trap in there. I wil put leaves on top of the trap and then I'm going to put a piece of gum on it because my monster loves gum, and it will fall in the trap. I built my monster trap using a shoe box, vanilla ice cream bottom, copy of a Cheezits box and some string. Once I left a Cheezit box out and a little monster came out and it likes Cheezits. How I built a monster trap:
I wanted a cage with a trap door and dangling bait. I got a box and cut a cage and the trap door. I place a pole with a rope above the trap door. Then I put a ladder up the side of the box to reach the bait. I tied a giant spider as bait to lure the monster. The spider wriggled and jiggled to attract the monster. The monster trap is now ready to use. First I colored the box. Next I cut a hole inside the box. Then I put the bait in (cheese stick.) Then I taped the baggie on the box. Then I taped leaves on the box. Last I made a rope out of thread so the monster can climb up on to the box.
First the monster smells the bait. Next the monster climbs up the rope. The monster will look for the bait then when the monster walks in the center he will fall inside the box.
How I made my trap:
It's made out of shoe boxes and paper and glue. It even has a fire pit.
